Aakash tablets will be almost free for students in the country, said the Minister for HRD, Communications & IT, Government of India, Kapil Sibal, who was the chief guest at ISA Vision Summit 2012.
Sibal further added that based on the feedback from Aakash 1, they would be launching Aakash 2 which is a much better, faster and more efficient version than the previous model. The current cost of Aakash is Rs 2276 each upto a one lakh units. The cost will come down to Rs 1500 once the numbers increase to one million. Sibal said the cost would further be subsidized going forward with being partly funded by the educational institutions. Aakash will go in for indigenous production.
Sibal emphasised upon the need to make India the base for the development of semiconductors owing the availability of enormous human resources. This is more so considering that the electronics being the largest and fastest growing industry.
Another point that Sibal highlighted was with regards to Aadhar and the national e-governance plan applications, where mobility will be used for re-authentication and availing large number of government services without having to visit government offices. This will not only improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public services but will also help reduce corruption in public life, he said.
Sibal opened ISA Vision Summit 2012, the seventh edition of the flagship annual conference of India Semiconductor Association (ISA), the apex trade body representing the Indian semiconductor and electronics industry today. The theme of this years conference is Growth drivers for emerging markets: Semiconductors and Electronic Systems. This edition of the ISA Vision Summit was the largest Vision Summit, since its inception in 2006.
