Android is on an innovation spree. It is already present in close to 50 percent of smartphones in the world. But that is not enough. Now few tech companies are in a race to create a new class of Android powered tiny devices, which can be worn on the wrist or as a bracelet around the neck.
One of these companies is a new start-up called WIMM Labs, which counts former Rambus, Dell, Roku, Palm, EA, and Opera employees and investors on its books. It is trying to place Android on tiny devices that we can wear on our wrist or neck. It can even be slotted into other devices.
One model that has already been created by the company measures just 32 x 36 x 12.5mm and includes a 1-inch capacitive touchscreen, up to 32GB of memory, an accelerometer, magnetometer, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and audio output. A faster turnaround for apps is a distinct possibility as WIMM also offers SDK to support developers.
With a device like this the possibilities are limitless. It can serve as a compass, a wristwatch, a calendar and a communication device. You can even clip it on to your bike for journey feedback, or hang it around your neck and use it as an exercise planner/tracker.
As there is WiFi connectivity, there is easy access to the Internet. Users can have access to news updates, FM, up-to-date weather forecasts, bus timetables, etc. You might even be able to use to for conducting banking related transactions. The device can also be linked with other Android devices like smartphones or tablets.
