The man who pioneered the personal-computer industry and changed the way people think about technology, has died.

The statement released by the family of Jobs says, Steve Jobs "died peacefully today surrounded by his family." The exact cause of death has not been specified, but Jobs had been battling pancreatic cancer and several years ago had received a liver transplant. He stepped down as chief executive in August, handing the reins to long time deputy Tim Cook.

Tim Cook, in a letter to employees, said, Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. We will honour his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.

There will never be another Steve Jobs. He understood the soul of Apple and its innovative roots, and the importance of combining art and science in the creation of truly great products. Only he had the powerful personality, vision and taste to achieve greatness in this highly competitive world of technology.

It is time for us to remember the standout commencement address that Steve Jobs gave at Stanford University in 2005.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: If you live each day as if it was your last, someday youll most certainly be right.

It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?

And whenever the answer has been No for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that Ill be dead soon is the most important tool Ive ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

Jobs is survived by his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, and four children.
