The Telecom Subscription Data for the month of July released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) indicates that growth in the mobile sector has slowed down further. The total wireless subscriber base increased from 851.70 Million in June 2011 to 858.37 million in July 2011, thus registering a growth of only 0.78 percent. The share of Urban Subscriber has marginally decreased to 65.91 percent from 66.00 percent where as share of rural subscribers has marginally increased from 34.00 percent to 34.09 percent.
The latest numbers from TRAI shows that the same downtrend in new additions to the mobile subscriber base that began in April this year. In July, the Urban wireless teledensity has increased from 155.96 to 156.59 and Rural teledensity has increased from 34.58 to 34.92. Private operators continue to rule the wireless telephony market, as they hold more than 88.27 percent of the wireless market share. PSUs, BSNL and MTNL, hold only 11.73 percent market share.
Out of the total 858.37 Million subscribers, 601.73 Million subscribers were active subscribers on the date of Peak VLR for the month of July 2011, according to TRAI. The proportion of VLR subscribers is approximately 70.65 percent of the total wireless subscriber base reported by the service providers. Jammu & Kashmir has the highest proportion of VLR subscribers with 81.98 percent followed by Assam (78.25 percent) and Maharashtra (76.08 percent); Mumbai has the lowest proportion with 58.81 percent.
On the MNP front, TRAI report says that as per the data reported by the service providers, by the end of July 2011 about 155.48 lakh subscribers have submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their mobile number. Maximum numbers of MNP requests have been received from Gujarat, with Karnataka following as a close second. The minimum numbers of MNP requests were from Jammu & Kashmir where the number stands at only 3361.
Total Broadband subscriber base has increased from 12.32 million in June 2011 to 12.50 million in July 2011, there by showing a growth of 1.46 percent.
