It is difficult to estimate the cost of cyber crime to regular people, because most of such crimes never get reported.

The makers of Norton Internet Security, Symantec have come up with a new report stating that nearly 30 million people from India fell victim to cyber crime during the last one year. The losses suffered by these people could be in the tune of $ 4 billion, the study states.

While talking to media persons, Symantec country sale manager in India Gaurav Kanwal said, With the spread of internet, cyber crime has become more organised especially in the developing nations of the world.

"In India it is estimated that more than 29.9 million fell victim to cyber crime last year (2010), suffering direct financial loss of $ 4 billion (approx Rs 18,000 crore) and an additional $ 3.6 billion (approx Rs 16,200 crore) in time spent resolving the crime," Kanwal said stating the Norton Cyber crime Report 2011.

The Symantec study conducted online across 24 countries in February this year. 20,000 people participated globally in the study, out of these 600 were from India. The study further states that the global monetary loss caused by cyber criminals amounted to $ 388 billion while 431 million adults fell victim to cyber crimes.

The cyber crimes that were included in the study were viruses and malware, and also online scams, online harassment, having your social network profile hacked, and online credit card fraud. It was found that 69% of people have already been a victim in their lifetime and 65% have been victimized in the last 12 months, globally. The number of victims varies from country to country.

The study also declares that men are more likely to be victims of cyber crime. This is because men tend to be online longer than women and this exposes them to more potential online risks. And men might visit adult, dating and gambling sites more often. These are the kind of sites that often host malware.

The six countries where cyber crime is highest in the world are all emerging markets like China on the top followed by South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, India and Singapore.
