129.85 lakh users opt for MNP: new TRAI report

The new TRAI report indicates that there is a significant slowdown in the rate at which companies add new subscribers.

The Telecom Subscription Data as on 30 June 2011, released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) indicates that Mobile Number Portability requests have increased from 105.70 lakh subscribers at the end of May 2011 to 129.85 lakh subscribers at the end of June 2011. This means that after an initial euphoria that saw large number of users migrating to other networks, now much fewer users are opting for the MNP route. A degree of stability seems to have arrived in the telecom sector.

The total number of wireless subscribers as of 30 June 2011 stands at 851.70 million. However, the active wireless subscribers on the date of peak VLR (visitor location register) in June 2011 are 594.77 million only. Broadband subscription numbers remain marked by rather tepid growth. The broadband subscription reached 12.32 Million in June 2011 from 12.12 Million in May 2011. This means a growth of mere 1.64%.

The share of Urban Subscriber has marginally declined to 66.36% from 66.38% where as share of Rural Subscribers has marginally increased from 33.62% to 33.64%.

According to the TRAI data the overall teledensity in India has now reached to 73.97 at the end of June 2011 from 73.11 of the previous month. The overall Urban teledensity has increased from 161.37 to 163.13 and Rural teledensity increased from 35.15 to 35.60. Private operators hold 88.35% of the wireless market share where as BSNL and MTNL, two PSU operators hold only 11.65% market share. The highest numbers of subscribers in the wireless segment are with Bharti.

As of June 2011, Bharti had 169186247 subscribers; this represents an addition of 2120958 new subscribers from the month of May. Reliance is the number two company as far as subscriber numbers are concerned and Vodafone is number three. Tata and Idea are at the fourth and fifth position as far as subscriber numbers are concerned.
