Some user passwords of professional networking site LinkedIn and dating site eHarmony were breached, according to a Reuters report. This came to light after security experts discovered scrambled files with passwords for millions of online accounts.
The report says that the two companies haven't disclosed the number of accounts breached for their respective websites but there are guesstimates that these could run into thousands if not lakhs.
Mary Landesman, senior researcher with messaging security firm Cloudmark, is quoted by Reuters as saying that a hacker who has access to somebody's LinkedIn credentials along with their eHarmony account might try to commit extortion.
As per a different but related article on Mashable.com, LinkedIn issued an apology for the inconvenience this has caused our members.
It is not clear if any LinkedIn members in India are affected.
According to Mashable, the breach comes on the heels of news that LinkedIns iOS app potentially violates user privacy by sending detailed calendar entries to its servers.
