App downloads from Android might surpass those from Apple if the report released by Ovum is anything to go by.

According to the new report from the market research firm Ovum, app downloads from the Android market are poised to touch a whopping 8.1 billion downloads figure, as compared to 6 billion downloads off Apple's app store. This represents a phenomenal rise from last year, when 1.4 billion apps got downloaded from Android market, and 2.7 billion from the Apples app store.

Nick Dillon, devices analyst at Ovum said, Consumers seemingly insatiable demand for mobile applications is set to continue this year, with downloads from app stores increasing around the world. The outlook for the longer term is also positive, with consumers set to continue to use apps to add new features to their phones and to access their favourite services on the go.

Ovum estimates that in the Asia Pacific region the revenues from paid mobile phone applications can reach the $871 million mark in 2011, an increase of $569 million in comparison to $302 million in 2010. This number can increase to $2.2 billion in 2016. Also, the total number of mobile phone applications downloads in the region can touch the 5 billion mark by the end of 2011. This will be an increase of 189 per cent in comparison to 1.6 billion downloads in 2010.

Last year, the two top players, Android and Apple, had accounted for 244 million and 424 million downloads in Asia-Pacific, respectively. Androids dominance in this area would soar over the next few years and by 2016, there would be almost double the total number of Android phone application downloads compared to iPhones, with 6.07 billion and 3.4 billion, respectively. Ovum says that Androids lead over Apple is primarily being driven by the lower price of Android handsets.

The other significant shifts indicated by the Ovum report include the rise of the Windows Phone operating system, which is set to overtake BlackBerry for the third slot, both in terms of the total number of downloads and revenues, by 2015.
