Windows XP Machines Move Out of Corporate LAN

Every time, there is a technological mandate on banks, banking ITDMs try to find out that solution which will not only serve the customers the best solution but ensuring compliance with RBI norms in following the guidelines around their security and compliance solutions. 

One such situation arose now. The support to Microsoft XP will be withdrawn which creates a major critical situation for many banking CISOs as many systems run on XP.

With Microsoft stopping security updates on Windows XP, major banks have been equipped themselves be ready for the OS migration.

A CISO of a very large Indian bank says, “This is not something that has come bold from the blue. It was clearly publicised that April 8 is going to be sunset for Microsoft XP.A large percentage of our end-point infrastructure which was there in XP has been migrated to Windows 7or in the process of being migrated to windows 7.”

There are some machines which will continue to be on windows XP due to dependencies on applications. Some of the applications running on XP will not run on 7. About 6-7 per cent of the machines will continue on XP but kept on a separate VLAN, outside corporate LAN. These machines will not be connected to the rest of the network or internet to eliminate any possibility of security breach.

Sameer Ratolikar, CISO, Axis Bank has also in the process of replacing Windows XP with a better OS.

In most of the banks, the migration started 18 months back and was carried out in 2-3 phases.

Service providers will provide the critical security patches as soon as any vulnerability gets identified. It is an extended support agreement under special support arrangement that will continue till all the machines migrate to Windows 7.

Vishal Salvi, CSO, HDFC Bank says, “We started this program about 18 months back. We started with testing the machines and now, we have completed the migration process from XP to Windows 7.”
