India becomes a favourite for phishing attacks

India witnessed 7 per cent of all global phishing attacks, making it the third most targeted country after US and UK

India has earned an unenviable distinction of being one of the top five countries in the world
to be targeted by phishing attacks. As per the findings of RSAs in November 2012, India
witnessed nearly 7 per cent of all global phishing attacks, making it the third most targeted
country after US and UK.
India replaced Canada, which saw a significant decrease in the number of phishing attacks
from 27 per cent to a mere 4 per cent in the month of November. Researchers at RSA noted
an overall increase of 24 per cent in phishing attacks in November.
The RSA report also highlighted the growing use of Ransomware attackers. Ransomware is
essentially a Trojan/malware that can lock files on an infested machine and restrict access to
the computer unless the user agrees to pay a ransom' for the restrictions to be removed.
Such malware kits are said to be going for as little as $899 in the underground market.
