After many days of deliberation, a US jury has found that Google has infringed on some of the copyrights held by Oracle for the latter's Java programming language, notes a report on Reuters.com.
However, the jury seems to be still in split-hair mode on whether the infringement by Google constituted fair use and all its associated legal ramifications.
Says the Reuters report: "The fair use question is crucial to determining damages. If Google's use of the Java programming tools is determined to be fair, the company would not be liable for damages in connection with some of Oracle's copyrights."
The partial verdict was read in a San Francisco, California federal court. Brought by Oracle in August 2010, the lawsuit is now expected to enter the next phase, in which patent claims would be contested. The damages would be decided later, in the third phase of the trial, according to the Reuters article.
