HP's new chief exec Meg Whitman has put the lid on previous CEO Leo Apotheker's decision to hive off the company's PC unit. And close on the heels of this move, it's announced entry into the high-end laptop space of the ultraportables - notebooks with thinness less than 0.8 inch and weight under three pounds.
According to reports, separating the PC unit would have cost the company $1.5 billion in one-time expenses and another $1 billion annually. So, goodbye to an expensive choice.
Still, Whitman is being eagerly watched by the industry about the future course of action she takes on HP's much talked-about software, WebOS. Apotheker had also shelved it after poor showing of the company's TouchPad tablets that ran WebOS.
But now that the company has announced its decision to be in the ultrabook space, it is likely that WebOS will return in a new avatar or on new devices.
