You may try to dismiss those who use Twitter as inveterate twits. Many people do use the service to post self-promotional links or the most inconsequential details about their daily lives. This burger tastes great, etc. Who cares how tasty or untasty your burger tastes! The rise of smartphones has only added to Twitters popularity. Now most users use their handheld devices to post small tweets.
Despite the abundance of frivolous tweets, there is no denying the fact that the company is going from strength to strength. The latest blog post from Twitter claims that the microblogging site is now posting 200 million tweets per day. Only a year ago the site was posting 65 million tweets per day. By any account this is a phenomenal growth. So now we are having almost a billion tweets every five days.
Twitters blog post goes on to say, For perspective, every day, the world writes the equivalent of a 10 million-page book in Tweets or 8,163 copies of Leo Tolstoys War and Peace. Reading this much text would take more than 31 years and stacking this many copies of War and Peace would reach the height of about 1,470 feet, nearly the ground-to-roof height of Taiwans Taipei 101, the second tallest building in the world.
