Cloud services spending will hit $72.9 billion

Almost half of all new spending in five growth sectors in IT could go into the cloud space.

The new press release from International Data Corporation (IDC), indicates that cloud computing will continue to reshape the IT landscape. Public cloud computing services, expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.6%, will be a $72.9 billion market in 2015, up from $21.5 billion in 2010. In the IDC lexicon, public cloud is defined as a service that is commercially offered to an unrestricted marketplace of potential users.

Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC says, Cloud services are interconnected with and accelerated by other disruptive technologies, including mobile devices, wireless networks, big data analytics, and social networking. Together, these technologies are merging into the industry's third major platform for long-term growth. As during the mainframe and PC eras, the new platform promises to radically expand the users and uses of information technology, leading to a wide and entirely new variety of intelligent industry solutions.

Public cloud services have received a big impetus due to the efforts of major players like Google and Amazon. Other major vendors in IT space like HP, Dell and IBM have also indicated their plans for the Cloud. The IDC report also indicates that in 2015, public cloud services will account for 46% of net new growth in overall IT spending in five key product categories applications, application development and deployment, systems infrastructure software, basic storage, and servers. Software-oriented cloud services (SaaS) are expected to account for roughly three quarters of all spending on public cloud IT services.

The spending in cloud services, which are hardware-oriented and consist of things like servers and storage, will be driven largely by the infrastructure building activities of the SaaS providers. Geographically speaking, USA is going to dominate the cloud space, with 50 per cent of the total revenues coming from the country in 2015. However, the IDC research has also discovered that there are more cloud services vendors and end users in Asia than previously thought. There is going to be phenomenal growth in several parts of Asia.
