MTNL to spend Rs 1,145 cr in FY12 on new services and networks

Kuldip Singh, the Chairman and Managing Director of state-owned Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd (MTNL), said that the company has earmarked Rs 1,145 crore in 2011-12 to launch new services and upgrade its network. The company is also in talks with private operators like Tata Teleservices and Aircel for allowing roaming access on their respective networks for 3G customers. We are discussing the 3G (access) sharing with two companies - Tata and Aircel. We should take a decision in a month or so, Kuldip Singh said.
On May 27, MTNL also launched its push mail services in association with BharatBerry in Mumbai. The service will enable users to synchronise multiple email accounts with their phone and access them at the press of a button. A similar service is expected to become operational soon in Delhi. BharatBerry has its secure servers located in India and is being regarded as the Indian version of BlackBerry. Unlike BlackBerry whose system works only on handsets from Canada based, RIM, the BharatBerry applications can work on any Java enabled, GPRS-enabled handset.
The partnership between MTNL and BhartBerry will provide customers with an easy to use, cost effective solution for their mobile push e-mail requirements. As the mobile data connectivity is improving and data usage is growing, more and more customers are looking for push e-mail solution on their mobile handsets as a productivity tool and as a means to remain connected, said Kuldip Singh. MTNL users who wish to subscribe to BharatBerry services can use the dedicated SMS number, 51122. The service will be available for both the pre paid and post paid subscribers.
According to Ajay Data, director of BhartBerry, all the necessary steps have been taken to ensure customer privacy and security. The BharatBerry service had been launched by Data Infosys Limited, an ISP and email service provider from Rajasthan, on October 30, 2010. As the servers are located in India, the BharatBerry service follows all the regulatory and compliance related norms stipulated by the government of India.
