India Printer, MFP market grew 10% in Q4 2010

Most print vendors reported good growth because of increased IT spending, says Gartner

New Delhi: The combined serial inkjet and page printer, copier and multifunction product (MFP) market in India totaled 6,81,142 units in the fourth quarter of 2010, a 10 percent increase from the fourth quarter of 2009, according to Gartner

"With the growth in IT sector and overall consumer confidence, there has been a spur in IT spending including the small and midsize business (SMB) and government sectors. Hence most print vendors reported good growth," said Amrita Choudhury, research analyst at Gartner.

"HP, Canon, Epson and Samsung continued to be the top 4 vendors accounting for 94 percent of the total India printer market in the fourth quarter of 2010 (see Table 1). HP remained the leader in the India printer, copier and MFP market with a market share of 55.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010, while Canon followed with 24.6 percent market share."

HP maintained its leadership position in the A4 MFP market with 60 percent market share followed by Canon with 20 percent. Samsung grew 34 percent in the A4 MFP segment and accounted for 7 percent of the market in the fourth quarter 2010.

In the A3 flatbed copier MFP segment, Toshiba lead the market with 31 percent market share, followed by Canon with 21 percent. Toshiba grew 136 percent with continuous focus on the government sector whereas; Canon grew 23 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010 compared to the fourth quarter 2009.

The page printer market grew by only 2 percent in the fourth quarter 2010. HP which leads the page printer market with a 46 percent market share recorded only 1 percent growth in the fourth quarter 2010, while Canon, with 40 percent market share, grew by 20 percent. Samsung recorded a decline of 28 percent but held 10 percent market share in the Indian page printer market
