Google 85% and Wiki 77% seem to be a way of life for kids in India to source information

New Delhi : Indias Youth is a group of confident, optimistic, career minded and socially connected individuals, according to the second annual The Web 2.0 Generation survey, conducted by Indias largest IT solutions provider, Tata Consultancy Services. TCS polled over 10,000 school going children between the ages of 12-18 in 11 cities across India during 2009-10 to understand the emerging trends amongst this important group.

The survey shows that Indias youth are more likely to have a mobile phone than not, seamlessly move from fixed to mobile internet, are spending more time online than ever before and have embraced social networks in a uniquely Indian way.

Educationally, the grass is greener mentality of studying abroad seems to have high but many school children considering the values of studying in India as well. And even at a relatively young age, Indias school children are thinking about new skills and salaries when they consider future careers.

Ajoy Mukherjee, Vice President, Head, Global Human Resources said: Nearly half of Indias total population is under the age of 20 and classified under the youth category creating a group of over 459 million* more than the whole of the American population. This sizeable generation is already shaping the country and will play an incredibly important role in the direction that the nation takes next.

We plan to use these of the findings to understand the next generation better and it will help us not just to find the best students, but also guide us as to how and what we communicate with them. This is the new, socially connected India that is important for all of us to better understand.

National Highlights:

  • Home access to the internet is significant at 86% in the Metros and Mini Metros (79%)
  • 85% of them are hooked to one or more social networking sites on the internet
  • Orkut 71% scores the highest followed by Facebook (65%)
  • IT 81 % & Engineering 80% job industry followed by Media & Entertainment 66%
  • Youngsters who choose IT rank software 53% as most preferred followed by gaming 38%
  • Internet 65% ranks high on pastime followed by sports 56%
  • 60 % of youth get pocket money less than 500

Highlights of the survey in Delhi:

  • Google (90%) is a clear favoruite for seeking information; others include Wiki and Library (70%); scores higher than All India average
  • Access is from home with over (88%) having home access followed by Mobile Phone; School is another important source
  • Study Blogs are also followed by (57%) of the youngsters; scores higher than all India average
  • Social Networking is also an entrenched phenomenon now; scores (86%) higher than all India average; Facebook & Orkut the two favorite websites; both score 72%; scores higher than All India average
  • Youngsters in Delhi are interested to go abroad for studies for graduation
  • Money & Interesting work place are important attributes when they would evaluate their career options
  • IT is the preferred career option followed by Engineering
  • Higher penetration of gadgets amongst youngsters; higher affinity to brands like Apple etc.; more money to their pocket
  • Rahul Gandhi is their favourite politician here also; miles ahead of others
