With 25.3% share, Samsung is top phone maker in US

Despite being mired in lawsuits with Apple, Samsung is doing pretty well in the handset space.

comScore has released its latest report on the Mobile Subscriber Market Share in USA. As far as the mobile OS is concerned, there are no surprises. The Android OS continues to rule the mobile OS space. Two out of five smartphone subscribers in USA use the Android OS, according to comScore. The survey says, Google Android continued to gain ground in the smartphone market reaching 40.1 percent market share in June.

More than 30,000 mobile subscribers in USA were surveyed by comScore during its study, and they found that Samsung was the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.3 percent market share. This means that Samsung has improved its presence in US market only marginally, by around 0.8 percent. LG with 21.3 percent share (up 0.4 percentage points) is at second place. Motorola with 14.5 percent share is at the third position. Apple too has managed to strengthen its position at number four by 1 percentage points and now it enjoys 8.9 percent share of mobile subscribers. RIM rounded out the top five with 7.9 percent share.

The number of people owning smartphones in USA has gone up by 8 percent from the preceding three-month period and stands at 78.5 million in the end of June 2011. Android is the top smartphone OS with 40.1 percent market share, up 5.4 percentage points. Apple strengthened its number two position with 26.6 percent of the smartphone market, up 1.1 percentage points from the prior reporting period. RIM ranked third with 23.4 percent share, followed by Microsoft (5.8 percent) and Symbian (2.0 percent).

comScore survey has also found that gaming was done by 26.9 percent of the mobile audience. This is up by 1.2 percentage points. 19.0 percent listened to music on their phones; this is up by 1.1 percentage points.
