MNP requests reach 105.70 lakh in May: TRAI

TRAI report shows that growth continues in the wireless segment, albeit at a much slower pace.

Latest report from TRAI shows that Mobile Number Portability requests rose to 105.70 lakh at the end of May 2011, from 85.41 lakh subscribers at the end of April 2011. On the date of peak VLR (visitor location register) in May 2011, the total number of active wireless subscribers reaches 588.13 million. Broadband subscription has also seen a marginal rise, as it stood at 12.12 million in May 2011, from 12.01 million in April 2011.

The number of telecom subscribers has grown at the rate of 1.53 per cent. It stands at 874.68 Million at the end of May 2011 from 861.48 Million at the end of April 2011. There is a marginal decline in the number of urban subscribers from 66.56 per cent to 66.38 per cent. The corresponding increase in rural subscribers has been from 33.62 per cent to 33.44 per cent.

At the end of May 2011, the overall Tele-density in India has reached 73.11. It stood at 72.08 in the previous month. The wireless market is completely dominated by the private players. The top private player is Bharti Airtel with 19.88 per cent of the market, which translates into 167065289 subscribers, at the end of May 2011. The company has added 2450602 subscribers in May.

Reliance stands at the close second, and is followed closely by Vodafone. Idea, Tata and Aircel and public service undertaking (PSU) BSNL are the other big players. The TRAI report shows a clear shift from wireline to the wireless segment. The wire-line segement saw a net decline in subscriber base from 34.55 Million in April 2011 to 34.40 Million at the end of May 2011. The share of Urban Subscriber has increased from 75.08% to 75.19% where as share of Rural Subscribers has declined to 24.81% from 24.92%.

Broadband is becoming more popular in the country. The total Broadband subscriber base has increased from 12.01 million in April 2011 to 12.12 million in May 2011, there by showing a growth of 0.92 %.
