Verizon blames technical issues for 4G outage

The 24-hour outage had caused disruption in data services for some customers in the US

Verizon Wireless has blamed technical problems for an outage on its newly launched 4G network. According to a report by Reuters, the outage prevented some US customers from accessing the Internet for about 24 hours.

The report quotes Thomas Pica from Verizon Wireless as saying that the disruption lasted from late Tuesday through Wednesday evening.

"The company's network operations team resolved a technical issue," Pica said, as per the report. He apparently declined to discuss the nature of the problem.

It is believed that the outage has dented Verizon Wireless's heavily advertised claims of the quality of its 4G network. It is also likely to be watched closely by telcos rolling out their own 4G services as well as by corporates and consumers considering subscribing to those services.

In India Reliance is understood to be the first among telcos that have finalised 4G service plans, though any 4G services are yet to see light of day. Curiously, the country continues to be still mired in 2G corruption controversies, tax evasion by telcos and poor quality of recently launched 3G services.

The Reuters article mentions that the Verizon outage is "at least the second outage since Verizon launched its 4G data service."

Verizon's voice, text messaging and 3G data services were now operating normally, Pica is quoted as saying in the Reuters report.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of US-based Verizon Communications Inc and the UK's Vodafone Group Plc.
