Idea launches low-cost smartphones to push 3G

The telco will bundle 3G data plans along with the China-sourced devices, pricing them as low as Rs5850

While the speed and covarge of 3G in India are still under fire from a lot of subscribers, Idea Cellular, India's fourth-biggest mobile phone carrier by subscribers, has upped the ante by launching low-cost smartphones from Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE.

According to a Reuters report published by EconomicTimes.com, Idea will sell the smartphones at Rs5,850 rupees ($110) and Rs7,992 rupees, respectively. Idea will also bundle free data services as an introductory offer.

The touchscreen smartphones are based on the Android operating system from Google.

Idea is also reportedly looking at launching tablets, a market dominated by Apple's iPad with a horde of imitators and copycats - but no other successes (barring Samsung's tabs, which are smaller than iPad in form factor).

Smartphones accounted for 6 percent of the total mobile device sales during the three months to September, as per Gartner, which expects the share to increase to 8 percent by next year.

While smartphone sales have been growing, when it comes to business applications usage India is still a laggard compared to the advanced markets like the US and Europe.
