In May India had 590,198,359 GSM connections

GSM players continue to suffer a drop in monthly additions.

The latest data from Cellular Operators Association India (COAI) indicates that while new connections in the GSM space continue to be added, the pace of growth might be slowing down. In April 2011, the numbers of new connections were more than 11 million, whereas in May 2011 only 9,533,357 new connections got added.

In May 2011, Bharti Airtel had 167,065,289 users and it enjoyed a market share of 28.31 per cent. Vodafone was at close second with 23.62 per cent of the market share and 139,426,769 users. Idea is at third position with 93,754,764 subscribers, which translates into a market share of 15.89 per cent. Both Airtel and Vodafone have added similar number of new subscribers in May. Their new additions stand at 2,451,585 and 2,447,566 respectively.

The two state own PSUs BSNL and MTNL enjoy subscriber figures of 87,618,769 and 5,234,574 respectively. The market share of BSNL is 14.85 per cent and that of MTNL is less than one per cent. It is interesting to note that Videocons subscriber numbers have actually declined. The company has lost 186,161 users, and in May 2011 its number of subscribers stands at 7,054,198.

The COAI data also indicates that Aircel is now the number five company in the GSM space. The companys overall subscriber figure in May stands at 57,061,824 and its market share is 9.67 per cent. Aircel added 1,111,367 new subscribers in May, and that is marginally higher than the number of subscribers that the company gained in April.
