Nokia uses NFC for Ra.One freebies

With help from PayMate, the phone giant has used Near Field Communication to give away film-related content

Near Field Communication, which is used in mobile devices to ease the purchase process with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, is not just about pure talk for Indian IT managers after all.

PayMate, an Indian wireless transactions platform provider, has developed an NFC technology solution that enables easy display, delivery, and purchase of goods and services using a simple tap.

With the recent launch of Nokias NFC enabled handsets, PayMate has partnered with Nokia to showcase to the Indian market some of the capabilities of NFC and bringing NFC to the Indian mainstream, notes a release.

According to Ajay Adiseshann, Founder and MD of PayMate, the deployment by Nokia is "the largest deployment of NFC touch points in India, which also happens to be one of the single largest deployments worldwide of NFC technology."

Viral Oza, Director - Marketing, Nokia India, said, "To create awareness around this technology, we have deployed NFC chips with unique content across almost 1,000 Nokia outlets in the country. The consumer response to the 'Just Tap' with NFC feature on our smartphones has been very encouraging. We are confident of the potential of this technology in the future and are working closely to get the ecosystem ready for this technology."

While the film Ra.One itself is apparently not doing very well, one hopes the NFC technology will come out of its hype phase and see many more deployments - both for consumers and enterprises - in the not-too-distant future.
