India printer, MFP market grew 57% in 3Q 2010

HP accounted for more than half of all printer, copier and MFP shipments in India

New Delhi: The combined serial inkjet and laser printer, copier and multifunctional product (MFP) market in India totalled nearly 0.8 million units in the third quarter of 2010, a 57.3% increase over the third quarter of 2009, according to Gartner.

Due to the festive season and some government purchases, all the major print vendors saw a double-digit growth in shipments in the quarter, said Vishal Tripathi, Principal Research Analyst at Gartner. HP, Canon, Epson and Samsung, the top 4 vendors, accounted for 94% of total shipments in the market in the third quarter of 2010, he added.

HP accounted for more than half of all printer, copier and MFP shipments in India (55.1%) in the third quarter of 2010. Canon experienced the strongest growth among the top 4 vendors, as its shipments increased 64.4% in the third quarter.

Canon, held onto the No. 1 position in the A3 Flatbed Copier/MFP market in the third quarter of 2010 with 23% market share, followed by Ricoh with 21% market share.

HP maintained its leadership position with 49% market share in the A4 Flatbed category, far ahead of Canon with 22% market share in Q3 2010. HP was able to resolve inventory issues and win back the channels confidence. This segment grew by 214%, due to Canons 237% and HPs 541% growth. Samsung recorded 69% growth year-on-year.

The page printer market in India grew 86% in the third quarter of 2010, riding on HP and Canons growth. HP grew in the triple-digits with 141% growth. HPs market share grew from 36% in 3Q09 to 47% in 3Q10. Canon registered 73% growth, but its market share went down to 36% in the third quarter of 2010 compared to 39% in the third quarter of 2009. Samsung recorded a 22% growth in the third quarter of 2010.
