Are IT Managers from Non-Tech Backgrounds Paid More?

Technology background is not the only criterion, finds ITNext IT Managers’Salary survey.

The debate that exists very much in the IT Managers’ community as well as the CIO community is – does IT folks with IT degrees and ones who come with technology certification are higher paid than the ones who are different academic background? 

Our survey focused on the qualification as one of the key factors in the compensation trends of IT managers.

Quite surprisingly, 40 per cent of respondents qualified in Life Sciences take home the highest package of Rs. 41 lakhs and more.

A majority of IT managers who have graduated in Engineering and Technology (42.6 per cent) are in the income slab of Rs. 11 to 20 lakhs
A majority of IT managers who have graduated in Engineering and Technology (42.6 per cent) are in the income slab of Rs. 11 to 20 lakhs. Only 7.4 per cent of them take home a salary of Rs. 31-40 lakhs per annum.

A majority of IT folks who have graduated in IT disciplines like computer science and computer applications also fall under the bracket of Rs. 11-20 lakhs. About 4 per cent of graduates from these are in the highest pay slab of Rs. 41 lakhs and more.

Also, IT managers coming from varied academic backgrounds are being paid well. 25 per cent of commerce graduates are paid Rs. 21-30 lakhs per annum and 15.8 per cent of those with a business studies background earn Rs. 31-40 lakhs.

“The degrees don’t matter today as the management needs smart brains, not just IT administrators” 

As the requirement has been warranted by the management for the IT Managers to be well versed in business and act as key business enablers, one of survey findings have not come as a surprise which indicates that among the respondents who hold a degree in Business Studies, 15.8 per cent of them take away a salary of Rs. 31-40 lakhs and 5.3 per cent of them enjoy the highest package (Rs.41-50 lakhs).

One of the Senior IT Manager of a leading television channel says, “The degrees don’t matter today as the management needs smart brains, not just IT administrators.

People coming from academic disciplines like economics, business studies stand a high chance of earning good package but they need to have couple of IT certifications to understand the technology better.”
