Bangalore: Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has announced a new programme that it claims can help enterprises reduce their storage capacity by nearly 50%.
To back up its claim of helping customers reduce operational and capital costs, the company launched what it calls the Storage Capacity Reclamation Guarantee programme that aims at providing support to customers to reduce their storage capacity through use of Hitachi virtualisation technologies.
By reducing storage capacity, HDS lowers customers operational costs through simpler storage management, more efficient use of resources and space, reduced power and cooling costs and avoided purchase of unnecessary frames and drives, the company said in a release.
Under the programme HDS offers Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning software to help customers reclaim storage that is stranded due to traditional thick provisioning processes, the company said adding that it has so far helped customers realise more than 65% reduction in storage capacity by applying best practices in cost savings.
While the economic forecast for 2010 is optimistic, we do not expect to see the drive to reduce costs to subside, Asim Zaheer, vice president of Corporate and Product Marketing at HDS said. He further added that the company was committed to help customers consolidate costsboth operational and capitalwhile still improving data center performance.
The company, however, clarified that the 50% capacity reduction guarantee is limited to the raw storage capacity being migrated from third party RAID-1 source environments to dynamically provisioned RAID-5 target environments. For any third party RAID-5 environment, the company said it is committed to ensure 20% storage capacity reduction.
If the guaranteed storage capacity reduction is not achieved, HDS will rebate money to the customer for the difference between the storage reduction guaranteed and the storage used, the company further stated.
The HDS products and services included in the guarantee program are Universal Storage Platform (V or VM), disk capacity equivalent to the guaranteed amount, dynamic provisioning software and storage reclamation service.
