The news was first reported in a Korean Economic daily that the worlds first Windows 8 tablet would be unveiled next week by Samsung and Microsoft. According to the report, the Windows 8 tablet from Samsung will be shown at Microsofts BUILD conference for developers in Anaheim. The event is scheduled between September 13 and 16.
The Windows 8 OS is not expected to become available until next year, but Microsoft has confirmed that it will reveal more details about the new version of Windows at BUILD. The user interface of this OS will be optimised for Tablets. Another new thing about this OS is that it will be the first version of Windows to run on ARM chips, which power the iPad.
Samsung is mired by lawsuits from Apple over the patent related issues that plague the Android OS. So Samsung could be interested in reducing its reliance on Google by entering into a new collaboration with Microsoft.
From Microsofts point of view, it makes sense for the company to tap Samsungs expertise, as Samsung has in short order become a premiere Android smartphone and tablet manufacturer. Samsung possess the hardware muscle and a distribution network to ensure a good initial response to what might as well turn out to be the worlds first Windows 8 Tablet.
Microsoft had predicted the Tablet revolution more than a decade ago, and yet it has failed to come to the market with a single good device. The tablet PC Gates unveiled at the Comdex tech show in November 2001 was too clunky to catch on. The slick-looking Hewlett-Packard prototype slate brandished by Ballmer at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2010 did not even make it onto the shelves.
It is likely that Windows 8 and its companion tablet hardware will become available in the market around this time next year.
