RIM fights back with new BlackBerry models

RIM has to move fast if it hopes to cover the ground that it has lost to companies like Samsung and Apple.

This could be the biggest ever-global launch of smart phones for RIM. The company has unveiled five new BlackBerry models running on its new BlackBerry 7 Operating System. The handsets include touchscreen phones, whose design is similar to the iPhone. They boast of improved screen displays and pack a 1.2 GHz processor from Qualcomm.

These new models are being billed as the most powerful BlackBerry phones ever. The handsets run on a new version of the core BlackBerry operating system, which aims to make browsing the Internet 40 per cent faster than previous models.

RIM is betting that the new handsets will help it maintain momentum in Europe and staunch market share losses in the US market where the company faces particularly strong competition from Apple and Android. The company has sunk from top to the third spot in the US in a matter of months due to increased competition.

It is also Significant to note that RIM, which usually introduces its new products in the US and Canada first, has chosen to launch its latest handsets simultaneously around the globe, with 225 operators, indicating perhaps that it is looking to markets outside North America to drive its next growth phase.

Mike Lazaridis, RIM president and co-CEO, said at the RIM headquarters at Waterloo near Toronto, This is the largest global launch of BlackBerry smart phones in our history. Investors have reacted favourably to the new development, and RIMs deflated stock price is up by 3 percent.
