The secret behind leaks of upcoming handset models

Hardly a day passes before an important upcoming model of some handset maker gets leaked, what is going on?

Too many upcoming handset models are getting leaked these days. It seems as if every international handset maker has a really bad security system to safeguard its research and development facilities. They cant even keep their upcoming models secret any more. Otherwise how can the pictures and videos of models that are still under development keep finding their way to technology websites?

The other day we had Verizon accidentally leaking upcoming touchscreen BlackBerry. iPhone 5 images have been leaked, any number of times. The images of a number of underdevelopment HTC phones have been leaked. Motorola seems to be leaking like a municipal faucet. Recently its Droid 3 specs, pictures and videos had been famously leaked.

Nokia and Samsung are also not leak proof. Nokia 5 has been leaked. The images of Nokia Zeta made headlines in a number of websites, so did the images of Samsung Galaxy S mini. The images of HPs webOS tablet were leaked much before the device finally made its debut in the market. Time and again, LG, Sony Erickson have also been found to be at their leaky best.

It is time we asked ourselves the crucial question why are the handset companies allowing their upcoming models to get leaked so easily? Perhaps this is the wrong question, because we are assuming that handset companies are not leaking the pictures of their upcoming products themselves. It is also possible that the leaked images are due to an elaborate publicity stunt.

A leaked picture or an elaborate demo-video means lot of extra publicity for the product. Through leaked images and videos the companies manage to generate the initial hype. The phone gets attention without even being there. The companies hope that all this extra hype will translate into sales when the product is finally launched.

However, this strategy of hyping a product by leaking images and videos before it is finally released can only work if it is used for one or two handsets. If every upcoming model being planned by top international tech companies gets leaked, then the strategy will loose its novelty factor. People will become blas to the leaks and the hype will become difficult, if not impossible, to generate.

So it is in the interest of the handset makers, the technology websites and the community of marketers to cut down on the leaks. They need to keep in mind that too many leaks will spoil the party for everyone.
