Despite its powerful technology, the PlayBook has been a laggard in the market. But RIM never stopped claiming that its tablet was the most secure and hence it was suitable for professional users. Now RIM has issued a press release saying that the PlayBook has become the first tablet to receive the FIPS 140-2 certification (Federal Information Processing Standard), which makes it be certified for deployment within U.S. federal government agencies.
No other tablet on the market has gained FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is required under the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA), the press release says.
Scott Totzke, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Security at Research, said, RIM is pleased to announce that the BlackBerry PlayBook is the first tablet approved under FIPS for use within the U.S. federal government. This certification demonstrates our continued commitment to meeting the needs of security-conscious organizations and enables the U.S. federal government to buy with confidence knowing that the PlayBook meets their computing policy requirements for protecting sensitive information.
The federal-approval might give a competitive edge to the PlayBook, as far as sales to various govt. agencies in USA are concerned, but its long-term success will still be determined by ordinary users. Till date RIM has not announced how many tablets it has succeeded in selling. It has only given the number of tablets shipped.
