Lenovo makes a big bang entry into tablet space

With the Chinese computer maker announcing three new tablets, the tablet wars are set to intensify.

With names like ThinkPad and IdeaPad already in its product list, you would have thought that Lenovo would be one of the primary vendors of tablets. But ThinkPad and IdeaPad are the names of laptops. However, it is better to be late than never. Lenovo has finally unveiled three tablets: Ideapad K1, Ideapad P1 and Thinkpad Tablet.

The IdeaPad K1 and ThinkPad tablets are set to debut in August, while the IdeaPad P1 is expected to arrive at an unspecified date later in the year. The K1 and the ThinkPad will run Android Honeycomb 3.1, whereas the P1 will run Windows 7. Lenovo has now turned out to be the first company in the world to launch tablets that run on both Windows 7 and Android.

All three tablets will deliver Netflix streaming. In fact, they will be the first three Android tablets in the world to offer Netflix. The K-1, which is going to be of interest to most ordinary tablet users, comes pre-loaded with 40 apps, including Need for Speed Shift, Angry Birds, Kindle and Documents to Go. It will have a 5MP rear facing camera and 2MP front facing camera.

The three tablets are targeted at different kinds of audiences. Liu Jun, president of the Mobile Internet Digital Home business group at Lenovo said, "Tablets are extremely personal technology devices. That's why we've created a family of tablets that has something for everyone, including entertainment-friendly features and content for consumers, or business-friendly features to enhance productivity for professionals as well as security and manageability for IT managers."

All three tablets feature 10.1-inch touchscreens. Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor powers the K1 and ThinkPad tablets, while the P1 will run an Intel 1.5GHz chip. Both the K1 and ThinkPad will weigh about 1.65 pounds, with the P1 slightly heavier at 1.75 pounds. It is also interesting to note that the tablets have been priced in such a way that they are cheaper than most other high-end tablets in the market.
