Sony is seldom satisfied with travelling down the beaten path. Case in point is the two new tablets that the company is planning. The unique thing about these devices is that they dont carry the rectangular shapes that all of us have become accustomed to when it comes to tablets. One of Sonys upcoming tablets looks and feels like a folded magazine. The second looks like an oversized sunglasses case. Yet they turn out to be quite comfortable to use.
Tentatively the tablets have been named S1 and S2. Both are based on Googles Android OS. SI seems rectangular from the front, but its back is moulded to create the feel of a folded magazine. So when you hold it in your hand, you will feel that you have an actual magazine. The grip in S1 is somewhat more comfortable and natural as compared to that in a normal tablet. The idea behind the S1 is to let the user feel as if he is reading from a printed magazine or newspaper.
The S2 resembles an oversize sunglasses case. It is rounded and it can be flipped open like a book to reveal not one, but two touchscreens, each measuring 5.5 inches diagonally. The split split-screen display turns out to be more appropriate for reading books. According to sources, Sony will be including a version of its e-book software, which is optimised for the device. Basically this device offers the advantages of both -the e-book reader and a tablet PC.
S1 and S2 are expected to appear in the market by the end of this year.
