In Minnesota, USA, a man called Barry Ardolf has been sentenced for 18 years for hacking into his neighbours WiFi network in a bid to frame them for child pornography and sexual harassment. He also used the hacked WiFi network for sending threatening e-mails to politicians, including Vice President Joe Biden.
Barry was angry with his neighbours, Matt and Bethany Kostolnik, after they reported him to police for allegedly kissing their young son. So he purchased a password cracking software and used to break the security on their WiFi router. After that he connected to the Internet through it and began setting up email accounts in the names of Matt and Bethany Kostolnik for causing all kinds of trouble.
He opened a MySpace page in the name of the couple and posted all kinds of derogatory material, including child porn, on it. He then e-mailed the same child porn to one of the husbands co-workers, and sent flirtatious e-mail to women in Mr. Kostolniks office.
The crime was uncovered after the FBI became involved when Barry made the mistake of sending threats to the Vice President through the connection owned by Matt and Bethany Kostolnik. The couple denied any wrongdoing. The investigators were soon able to work out that they were not involved. Barry was identified as the culprit. The FBI got a search warrant for his house and computer, and found reams of evidence, including copies of data swiped from the Kostolniks computer, and hacking manuals.
