Skype to power video chat on Facebook

With competition in the social networking space on the rise, Facebook is attempting to woo users with many new features.

Few days ago, the Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had titillated his audience on the Internet by claiming that the social networking giant would be announcing something awesome soon. This Wednesday, the nature of the awesome got revealed. It is video calling on Facebook, powered by Internet telephony giant Skype. So now, users are going to have video-chat capabilities built into their Facebook accounts. This will allow multiple friends to talk and see each other at the same time.

The system is eminently easy to use. All you need to do is browse to a friends profile; there you will see a new button that says Call. Click it. If the user at the other end accepts your call, you will be instantly connected thanks to the new video chat plug-in. Along with video chat, Facebook also unveiled a feature called Group Chat. The chat designed has been configured in such a way that you get to see the friends you message with most frequently, whether on or offline.

It is obvious that Facebook had to make a quick move towards enhancing its video chat capabilities due to the arrival of a new competitor on the block - Google+. Google is trying its best to use its newly launch medium to play catch up in the social networking space. Google+ has already received some positive feedback on its video call capabilities and that is something Facebook could not afford to ignore. According to industry analysts, Facebook has come under pressure since the launch of Google+.
