India's largest telecom company by subscribers and revenues, Bharti Airtel launched its 3G services in Gujarat at the midnight of 29th June 2011. The services will be available in Ahmedabad, Baroda, Rajkot, Surat, Gandhinagar, Bhavnagar, Nadiad, Anand, Bharuch, Ankleshwar, Amreli, Chikli, Dahej, Daman, Gandhidham, Godhra, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbander, Silvassa, Valsad, Vapi, Rajula, Diu, Una and Verawal.
Only two days ago, the company had announced the commencement of 3G services in Assam. However, in Assam only the city of Gawhati has been covered, and the company is in the process of expanding its 3G services to other cities and towns of the state. 3G is expected to have a good response in North East as out of about 54 lakh Airtel subscribers in the region, 30 per cent are GPRS users.
Earlier this week, Airtel had launched international video calling facility for its 3G customers in India. This service, currently available for 227 international countries, allows customers to leverage Airtel Internet on 3G for making international video calls. According to sources, as of April, Airtel had 2 million 3G customers.
