New Delhi: Progressive Infotech, a leading independent provider of IT Infrastructure Solutions and Services, has recently implemented Indias first private cloud at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. With this installation, IIT Delhi will be able to consolidate its entire departments into a common account.
The Progressive Infotech and VMware cloud migration solution moves VMotion from the binds of the local data center of IIT Delhi and enables live migration of both VMs and the back-end storage across the WAN between data centers and clouds.
To facilitate the set-up, the company had prepared a workflow that automates the majority of the migration, making it possible to execute with a minimum of manual configuration.
According to Prateek Garg, Founder, CEO and Managing Director, Progressive Infotech, Cloud computing is the backbone of Indias digital future. The setup of the private cloud at IIT Delhi is a milestone for us. This integrated solution enables long distance VMotion for the first time as a Private Cloud and does not require re-architecture of their local or remote networks.
He further adds, To investigate the feasibility of moving to a private cloud, IIT Delhi required a proof of concept (POC). Progressive Infotech, successfully showcased live migration, VMotion and other technologies that helped build their confidence in the private cloud approach
The set-up has offered flexibility to IIT Delhi, allowing them to move around the workloads easily for load balancing purposes and to allocate computing resources. The Computer Centre of IIT has always received high demand being a research-oriented institute of higher learning, IIT Delhi always faced high demand for computing.
Dr. Subhashis Banerjee, Professor, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering says, We are happy with the support provided by VMware and Progressive to the IIT Delhi CSC team to implement a private cloud at IIT Delhi, especially in setting up the physical infrastructure. They have been responsive to our needs and helped us in setting up a facility that has been well appreciated by the user community. "
Benefits of Private Cloud to IIT Delhi:
1. Cost effective Consolidated physical computing resources onto fewer hardware servers that host virtual machines, thereby reducing capital expenditure as well as power, cooling and recurring administrative costs.
2. More flexibility - The virtualization helps the Computer Centre to provide additional flexibility for deployment and customization, including the provision for automatically switching off/on nodes during lean/demand periods.
3. Easy Re-use of old data - Major beneficiary of the private cloud has been critical research/consulting projects that needs high computing requirements and some repetitive experimentations. After the deployment of the virtual machines, the old data could be stored and reused as and when required.
4. Time saving : With the rolling of private cloud, faculty and research students can request for dedicated virtual cluster indicating the number of nodes and disk space required, OS and computing environments preferred and the usage period (few hours to couple of weeks), this saves their time. Now, faculty can also authorize others (typically the research student/project associate involved with the project) to access the machines.
