In It is now certain that Amazon is going to launch its much-anticipated tablet by the end of this year. Till now the company has been offering digital content on its website, but it lacked the hardware to go with it. The Kindle is there, but it is only meant for digital books, you cant play games or listen to music on it. The new tablet will help Amazon provide more options to its customers, who will be able to buy and rent premium digital content.
The popularity of the iPad has been bolstered by its connection to Apples App Store, from where users can download all kinds of digital stuff. Amazon will be following a similar strategy. There could be discounts offered to buyers of digital content who use Amazons own tablet to download stuff from its site.
According to sources, the Amazon tablet will have nine-inch screen and will be running on Google's Android platform. Initially it had been reported that the tablet might not have a camera. But now it seems as if Amazon has decided to place a camera lens from Newmax Technology in its tablet. Lenses from Newmax are used in the sensors of Microsofts Kinect hands-free gaming system. The company also makes lenses for some smartphones PCs, notebook computers, and digital video cameras.
Many analysts are of the opinion that Amazon is uniquely positioned to succeed in the tablet space, as it already has a well known e-commerce site and it has the experience of marketing Kindle, which is one of worlds most popular digital book readers. Amazon is also planning to introduce two new models of Kindle towards the end of this year. One of these Kindle models will have a touchscreen.
