Worlds fastest cable broadband unveiled

The company claims that high broadband speeds could bring changes in society and spark a second industrial revolution.

Whereas the average broadband speed in UK is around 6mbps, UK based Virgin Media has demonstrated a system that offers 250 times greater speed of 1.5gbps. This new cable system has the potential to bring about a profound difference to the way we conduct business.

According to Virgin spokesperson, the 1.5Gb downstream/150Mb upstream trial has used the same infrastructure and technology as the company uses to provide home customers with 100Mb speeds. With such high speed a family with ten computers would face no problems in simultaneously downloading a different high-definition 3D movie to each device.

However, the most important impact of 1.5gbps speed could lie in fields such as medicine, cutting edge research etc. For instance, with improved speeds, doctors will be able to see their patients remotely with a very high level of detail. This will eliminate the cost of travel and bring sophisticated medical technologies to remote locations.

To deliver such a fast Internet service, Virgin Media has invested 13 billion to connect every cable home to its fibre optic network by a high-grade coaxial line.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said, At speeds of up to 1.5Gb, Virgin Media is delivering some of the fastest broadband in the world and, thanks to our ongoing investment, were able to anticipate and lead the way in meeting growing demand for bandwidth as future services and applications come online.

In a far-flung country like India a high-speed broadband network, like the one developed by Virgin Media, could make it easier for public and private entities to expand the reach of their services.
