The pilot ejected from the cockpit just before the aircraft crashed soon after take-off from the Chabua airbase about 400 kilometres north-east of the state capital Guwahati, a spokesman for the IAF said in New Delhi.

"The aircraft was on a routine training sortie. We believe it is a technical snag, as the pilot reported a technical error to the airbase," he said.

The pilot did not suffer any injuries.

An inquiry has been ordered to determine the reason behind the accident.

The series of crashes involving IAF planes has worried the Indian defence establishment.

Thursday's crash was the sixth accident this year - three MiG aircraft, a Sukhoi jet, a Surya Kiran training aircraft and an AN-32 transport aircraft have crashed since January 1. (dpa)
