In Market researcher comScore has placed iPads popularity into perspective by revealing that the iPad and its cousin iPad 2 account for 89 percent of the tablet web traffic internationally. For USA, alone the share of iPad and iPad2 in web traffic is even higher up to 97 percent of the tablet users are using the iPad to access the Internet. On a countrywide basis, the iPad traffic is highest in Canada, where it stands at 33.5 percent. India has the lowest iPad traffic, at only 4 percent.
However, even the Android based tablets fare very poorly as compared to the iPad, when it comes to mobile phones, the Android device are found to be generating much more web traffic as compared to Apples iPhone in most countries. In USA, the web traffic from iPhone devices stands at 23.5 percent, whereas from Android devices it is as high as 35.6 percent. In India, the iPhone and Android devices generate 2.8% and 6 percent of the web traffic respectively.
The comScore report also shows that 90.2 percent of web traffic in USA comes from PC. 7.4 percent is from mobile phones, 1.9 percent from tablets and rest from other devices. In India, the web traffic for PC, mobile phones and tablets stands at 96.9 percent, 2.9 percent and 0.2 percent respectively. The interesting thing is that more users in India use mobile phones and tablets to access the Internet as compared to France, Brazil, Germany and Argentina.
comScore also analysed the differences in traffic patterns between iOS and Android devices, in USA and it found out that iOS phones and tablets sourced a significantly higher share of device traffic from WiFi networks than Android devices. In case of iPhone, 47.5 percent of the web traffic occurred over WiFi networks, whereas in case of Android phones, only 21.7 percent occurred over WiFi networks. When it comes to tablets, an awesome 91.9 percent of iPad traffic occurred over WiFi networks compared to 65.2 percent among Android tablets.
The comScore findings make it obvious that whereas Android devices are doing quite well in the mobile phone arena, they have a long way to go in the tablet space. It also shows that the trend of accessing Internet through hand held devices is on rise in most countries, including India.
