Mobile Payment users to cross 100 mn in 2010

New Delhi: The number of mobile payment users worldwidewill exceed 108.6 million in 2010, a 54.5 percent increase from 2009, whenthere were 70.2 million users,says a recent research from Gartner. According to report, the
Mobile paymentusers will represent 2.1 percent of all mobile users in 2010.

"We continue to see strong growth in developing markets in Asia, EasternEurope, the Middle East and Africa for mobile payment, while adoption inNorth America and Western Europe lags behind due to the plentiful choices ofpayment instruments that consumers have," said Sandy Shen, research directorat Gartner. "Developing markets have found the right formula for mobilemoney services - functions that users want and an ecosystem that can sustainthe service."

"The answer for developed markets, however, remains elusive. The offeringsfor developed markets will take a different format," Ms. Shen said. "Insteadof a point offering for mobile payment, the service needs to be built on topof the existing payment behavior and infrastructure so that users can chooseany channel - retail, phone, online or mobile - that suits their context atthe moment of payment."

Asia/Pacific is the leading region with mobile payment users. InAsia/Pacific, mobile payment users will surpass 62.8 million in 2010 (seeTable 1), and represent 2.6 percent of all mobile users. In Europe, the
Middle East and Africa (EMEA), mobile payment users will total 27.1 million and represent 2.1 percent of all mobile users in the region. In
NorthAmerica, mobile payment users will number 3.5 million and represent 1.1percent of all mobile users in the region.
