Apple worth more than Microsoft

In comparison with Microsofts $219.2 billion, Apple's market cap stood at $222.1 billion

New Delhi: Apple has done it finally. It has overtaken Microsoft market capitalisation to become the highest valued tech company in the world. In comparison with Microsofts $219.2 billion, Apple's market cap stands at $222.1 billion, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Market capitalisation is a measure of companys worth, estimated by multiplying the market value of its shares with the total of its outstanding shares. Thus, it fluctuates wildly too, with the slightest change in share prices and investor sentiment.

Apple has been fast gaining mindshare because of its mobile platforms. First it was the iPod, then the iPhone and now it is the iPad that is giving Apple the edge in consumer technologies.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has not been able to make any inroads into consumer devices and has failed miserably to impress with products like Zune and their mobile phone operating system.

Their cash cows still remain their desktop and office applications. On the mobile front, their biggest hope lies on Windows Phone 7 OS, which is due to be launched on third-party devices by the end of this month.

But they face an uphill task there too, with two of their top execs in the entertainment division leaving a few days back. Robbie Bach and J Allard, who led various entertainment related portfolios in Microsoft, have decided to part ways.

Apple on the other hand, is rumoured to announce their new phone platform on June 7, when Steve Jobs takes centre stage as the keynote presenter of their World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC).

Microsoft needs to tighten its screws, and fast Google is not far behind.
