What chokes my Internet?

How to ensure adequate bandwidth and make applications run smooth

The situation...

“Ravinder, can you check what is wrong with the Internet again,” exclaimed exasperated Manoj Tyagi, Vice President of an investment banking firm in Delhi. “I need to urgently download the presentation that Kartik has sent from Mumbai,” he added.

“I am already printing this 300 page document for the client and need a copy of this presentation to complete it,” he added, raising the alarm bell. The delegate from the UK-based company was expected to reach the office soon.

Ravinder looked at his wrist watch to see the time, and it read 10:30. It had been only an hour into the Monday morning and this was already the fourth call. And all of them were about Internet connectivity.

Unknown to Manoj, Ravinder was already speaking to the service provider on the other line. “Sir, your dedicated 2 Mbps line is working absolutely fine. The problem is at your end. The connectivity is clean and there are no issues,” said the customer care executive. “Please check again, it can’t be,” an irritated Ravinder said.

Ravinder had hit a wall. He was the IT Manager at FreidCorp, an investment banking firm that employed 120 people at the Delhi office. The office was an icon in itself. Designed by a specialist firm from Hong Kong, the office was swank and modern. Everything was wireless, and the equipment had been pre-configured to ensure there were no problems, as some of the senior folks were Mac users.

What really confused and intrigued Ravinder was that everything was working fine. The wireless printing worked well, the backups happened, but the Internet was always a problem. The ISP kept on repeating that there were no issues. But there were issues—all the time.

All Ravinder could think was, “What would Sherlock Holmes do in a situation like this?” Everything, on the face of it, is fine, but something is afoot. Getting to the bottom of mystery was gnawing Ravinder.

The big questions...

  • What could be choking the Internet bandwidth at FreidCorp? the dedicated 2 Mbps line seems to be working well at the service provider’s end.
  • What should Ravinder do to permanently solve the problem?

What chokes my Internet?

Today Modern network are very completed and proliferation of different internet enable services has made understanding of the network infrastructure imperative.
Step by step analysis of the problem always helps to resolve the problem in optimum amount of time provided base work is already done. In today’s world use of gateway level security is a compulsion and every organization has to have one. I am assuming good corporate level UTM box or firewalled is already placed between ISP router and company intranet.

First thing Mr. Ravinder should do is to check the MRTG graph provided by ISP for getting bandwidth utilization report of upload and download from to company internal network. With this he can confirm whether the problem is from his internal network or it is ISP who should be to take accoutered for the not providing proper bandwidth or Latency for customer’s internet traffic.
From MRTG graph you will get graph of both upload as well as download. If utilization of either traffic is at 100%, then in such condition he should stop wasting time in calling ISP help desk and start looking for Firewall/Gateway logs for bandwidth hoggers.

Almost all firewalls are equipped with strategic tools like ACL (Access control list), QOS and policy based management of available bandwidth. Configuration of JFLOW, CFLOW is one of thing network administrator should do in advance along with SNMP triggers in all network enable devices.
With SNMP, malfunction in any of the device can be displayed on dashboard along with alarm generation which is turn can perform automatic corrective action in higher end network infrastructure. With JFLOW/CFLOW information captured through network management software like NetFlow Analyzer, Solar-Wind will give information which service, which IP, which user is utilizing internet bandwidth in what percentage. Also almost all the router/Firewalls,/Gateway devices can show the online sessions passing through the device with information like source/destination IP, Port numbers session utilization , how long session is active etc. From here he can catch the culprit responsible for getting the internet bandwidth to its bottleneck. Now this culprit can be a user trying to download a big movie or a virus / Trojan which is generating unsolicited traffic from inside network. He can take quick corrective action by calling concern person and asking him to stop the activity or in case of Trajan, by disconnecting the faulty computer from the network for further analysis.
Also further analysis of JFLO/CFLOW information will help him understanding the network traffic for past one week or more so that he can allocate bandwidth to different service and user accordingly.
