Data scientists in the US to observe highest salary jump among IT pros

Specialists are back in fashion, shows salary survey

Data scientists will record the highest jump of 6.4% in salaries in 2017, among all IT professionals in the US, according to 2017 Salary Guide for IT Professionals, released by recruitment firm, Robert Half. Interestingly, the report says front-end web developers will record the second highest average jump of 6.2%.

While top-end data jobs, such as data scientist and Big Data engineer will see big jumps, the growth is less secular in the data area. On the other hand, security, professionals at all levels are expecting to witness a high hikes in salaries. Security professionals collectively will take home more than 5% of what they did in 2016, according to the report. Web development, data and consulting/integration are the other areas that will see good hike in salaries, says the report. Operations and QA/testing will record the lowest growth in salaries.

In terms of absolute salaries, C-level executives like CIO, CTO and CSO take home the highest salaries. However, within this band, while CIOs and CTOs will see moderate growths in their salaries, CSOs are expected to see impressive growth. Among the specialists, Big Data engineer, IS security managers, data architects and network architects will continue to draw the highest salary. Almost all positions that are expected to see highest growth in salaries are specialist IT jobs. Interestingly, IT auditing positions, such as senior IT auditors and IT auditors are also expected to see good jumps in salaries.

The report says engaging contract workers and retaining employees are top priorities among CIOs.
